Social Dance
Lifelong Wellness Application Paper
1. What did you learn about lifelong wellness from taking this General Education Class?
Lifelong wellness does not only mean being physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. Exercise, such as social dancing is a way to keep active throughout your entire life and to keep your mind stimulated. Married couples can use social dance as a way to connect, stay close, and as an activity to get out and do together. Ballroom dancing is something you can do at any age without having great impact on your joints or a great risk of injury. Social dance gets your cardiovascular system going as well as working and toning your muscles.
2. How would you apply your answer to question #1 to your life?
I would have never expected social dance to give me such a good work out, so this course has broadened my perspective on the definition of a workout. I will now search for many different types of activities in the future to maintain my own personal health. Social dance has shown me for future reference that being active can be enjoyable too.
3. How do you plan to continue to practice what you have learned here in your life?
I love dancing so I will practice what I learned on dancing parties. In the past I would not know how to dance in the correct way certain dances, but know I will do pretty well. That is what sets apart social dance from any other activity I have ever done and is the main reason why I will continue to participate in it throughout my life by going to classes, dance clubs, and maybe someday even competing.
4. What were your instructor's strengths as a teacher?
The good things about the teacher is that she is always cheerful and It is very noticeable that she LOVE dancing. She feels that passion for this art and she spontaneously transmitted to us making us love more what we learn. Also, she would be patient with those who’s is kind of hard to learn a real new dance style. She will give a lot of new techniques to learn an step. The final also, was very fun helping us to recognize and record in a cd what we just learned.
5. General ideas for improving this course.
Although this is a beginning level course, and an accelerated summer semester, I think an improvement would be to implement even more styles of dance throughout the semester. The more diverse the material, the more likely it is to appeal to a variety of students.
6. How can your instructor help to facilitate your answer to question #5?
Probably, making a little shorter every dancing style learning time. In that way be able to incorporate more dancing styles to the curricula.
